- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is confident of being elected to a second term. He says he will confirm his intention to “when the appropriate opportunity comes.”
- On Wednesday, Ban appointed Martin Mogwanja of Kenya as the new Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. Mr. Mogwanja has been a project officer and official with UNICEF since 1977.
- 50% of Canadians believes their government’s loss in the Security Council election was due to Canada’s current foreign policy. Only 31% blamed it on remarks by opposition leader Michael Ignatieff.
- Japan will step down as a temporary member of the Security Council at the end of the year, but continues to campaign for a permanent seat. Member states of the Pacific Island Forum will “each make their own decision about whether” to support the campaign.
