Morning Memo

  • Friday, 10 September, is an official holiday at UN Headquarters. UN Offices in New York will not be open.
  • Yesterday, ECOSOC adopted a oral decision to elect 41-member Board for UN Women by early November. Consultations on the process will continue next week.
  • Colum Lynch updates his earlier post on the “intoxicated rant” by Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang. A UN-based diplomat suggests to Lynch that Sha won’t be fired, but likely “will serve out the final year of his term as Ban’s undersecretary” before stepping down or being recalled by Beijing.
  • Fight over European seats on the IMF Board continues, with the Netherlands-led delegation (which also represents Ukraine and Romania) insisting on being “properly represented.
